In Ecclesiastes 5:1-7, we are challenged to consider the consequences of making vows before we actually commit to them. I preached on this Wednesday night to a large gathering of college students. Here are the main ideas behind the passage and some good instruction when it comes to making promises to God and others.
1. Consider your motives before committing with your mouth
2. Your depth of dedication in relationships will be equivalent to your consistency of committment in other areas
3. Falling in love is accidental. Walking in love is deliberate. Can you walk after you fall?
4. You can't "walk with one" until you've "walked away" from all others.
5. Commitment is the glue that holds a marriage together when everything tries to break it apart.
The reason we make vows, promises, commitments, and even sign contracts (home loans, marriage license) is so that when we don't want to stay dedicted to a decision, we will stay dedicated anyway. The vow is a reminder and a binder that holds us to our word.
I hope you will take a few minutes to watch the messge and be encouraged that God has kept every promise to us in Jesus Christ.
